La Fleur Dominicana Double Ligero DL700 Maduro
I've always had a soft spot for La Fleur Dominicana cigars, especially the double ligero series. They always pack a nice punch that'll knock you about a little bit, even for a semi-experienced cigar smoker like myself. In fact, I remember the first one I ever had I actually felt a bit sick on the car ride home from my Father-in-Law's house from the massive nicotine consumption from it.
The double ligero is a seriously powerful line that features the ligero leafs of tobacco, which are the upper most leafs on the tobacco plant. This means they are exposed to the sun the most, which in turn means they're produce the most strength along with their rich flavours. The fact that La Fleur Dominicana and Litto Gomez, the founder of LFD, decided to make a double ligero line, well, you can imagine, double the power. I got hooked on these from my friend that lives in Virigina, who's local shop is Olde Towne Tobacconist. If you have heard of La Fleur Dominciana's "The Digger", which is this cigar same cigar blend but a whopping 8.5" x 60, this is the shop that helped bring it to life. I might give more info about that cigar when I eventually get around to smoking the one I've had in my humidor for about 4 years now. The reason for putting it off...finding at least two and a half hours to smoke it. Anyways, back to the cigar at hand.
First impressions of the DL700 are impressive. Featuring a beautiful dark, oily, maduro colour. There were a few veins, no soft or hard spots, but firm all around with nothing that distracted from the overall appearance of a lovely looking cigar. The armoa of the cigar is a hint of sweetness and earthy tones when pulling it out of the packaging. You can already tell this bad boy is going to pack a nice little punch.
I went for the good ol' punch cut, one I use frequently. The draw was perfect and cold all the way through the cigar. The first inch starts off strong punch that knocks you back a little bit if you're not expecting it with peppery notes and also a slight sweetness, like cinnamon. It then hits out to the spices before you reach the second third that brings back the sweet notes with a hint of earthy tones thrown in. As you begin the climax into the final third, this bad boy really begins to bring it to you with strong earthy tones.
This is a big ring guage cigar, and most they usually don't burn very evenly. This one wasn't an exception, although it was very easy to control with a few touch ups here and there. The ash holds on fairly well, usually for at least half the cigar, although this time it was a bit windy so I chose to ash before it ended up in my lap. The DL700 produced so much smoke, I would of had to call the Fire Department had I not been smoking a cigar, which for me is a massive plus as I do enjoy blowing some smoke rings. It also tends to linger, unless you have wind, which is nice as the aroma of the cigar engulfs you. I've had this particular cigar a few times now, and every time I'm still impressed with it. It's definately one of my "go to" cigars.
Something to note, this cigar is not for the faint hearted. I recommend smoking on a full stomach, and definately do not recommend for beginner or even fairly new cigar smokers.
